A leading figure in the underground dance fraternity, James Monro set the music scene alight, “In the Ether”. A product of a lifetime’s involvement in the industry, a pair of tracks are now remixed, courtesy of a trio of Australian talents.
Australian duo, Uone and Western, possess formidable reputations across the global dance scene. Uone draws on a plethora of genres to reflect an ever-changing sonic palette that radiates a host of “exotic tribal cultures, sounds of urban swing and 60s psychedelia”. The resultant blend has seen the Melbourne DJ cross the world at a host of leading events and clubs including Burning Man and his hometown, “Rainbow Serpent Festival”. In tandem, a stellar production career has resulted in over a century of credits for such leading imprints as Sprout, Heinz Music and Stil Vor Talent. Working alongside his fellow countryman, Nicholas West, Uone and Western have delivered a score of credits for leading imprints including KATERMUKKE, Dear Deer and Sol Selectas. Indeed, the “Hidden Oasis” EP for the latter, including remixes from Jonas Saalbach and Dreems, was a notable highlight of the label’s hugely successful 2017 release schedule. Making their Proton Music debut, the Uone and Western remix of “Voyager” is a beautifully constructed affair that radiates the energy of Monro’s original, paying tribute to the melodic tropes that played a central role, while adding a host of additional production material. As new motifs extend the reach and feel, a huge bassline adds low-end dominance while sumptuous pads and rich delays add texture and depth. A loquacious vocal sample further adds intrigue and style in the aptly named “Space Tribute” remix.
Winners of the 2013 “People’s Choice – DJ/Producer” honour for the Australian Independent Music Awards, Brent and Scott Mirams have hit upon a formula for success with their Thankyou City pseudonym. Regulars across the clubs of their Melbourne hometown with their scintillating and spine-tingling DJ sets, the Thankyou City production portfolio sees the duo signed to some of the finest über-cool imprints that include Chameleon, Sprout and the Australian based, Open Records. Indeed, original tracks for the latter that include the Thankyou City production talent in “Nothin’ But Chi”, “Desert Feathers” and “Iron Horse”, are joined by the stunning rework of Doppel’s “Melt” in late 2016. Now making their debut on Proton Music, Thankyou City takes on “Galactix” with trademark flair as a strong beat twins with pulsating pads and intelligent percussion to create a stunning rework. Building elegantly throughout, the themes inherent in James Monro’s original are intelligently explored as running bassline and sumptuous textures are married to a host of new production material, adding real elegance and sheen to the Thankyou City remix.
A pair of new remixes from Uone, Western and Thankyou City find James Monro’s magnum opus still very much, “In the Ether”.
